San Diego County schools are struggling with a labor shortage

School district leaders across San Diego County and the country say they can’t find enough substitute teachers, bus drivers, special education aides, substitute custodians, after-school program aides and front-office staff.

Sometimes principals, non-classroom teachers, district office staff, even human resources directors, have been teaching in the classroom because schools can’t find enough subs.

To entice more substitute teachers, districts are bidding up the daily rates substitutes get paid to higher-than-ever levels.
