Eric Hall Scholarship Fund Recipients Meet with Eric
Shakila Guevara and Dustin Atlas are award recipients of the Eric Hall Scholarship Fund, sponsored by the Coastal Community Foundation. Both students recently met with Eric. They were awarded the Eric Hall Scholarship in 2011 and 2010, respectively and both graduated from the San Dieguito High School Academy in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Shakila and Dustin credit the Academy’s unique curriculum structure, which lets them take 8 courses per year, for having developed their interests. Read more about these outstanding students here.
Eric Hall and Victoria Carreón presented a 5-point fiscal recovery plan to the financially strapped Board on July 20, 2011. This plan reduces the District's anticipated $6.9 million budget shortfall for 2012-13 by $6 million and begins the turnaround to fiscal health. The presentation to the District is available here.
Hesperia Junior Gym Groundbreaking
On May 16, 2011, the Hesperia Unified School District held a groundbreaking ceremony for its long awaited gymnasium at the Hesperia Junior High School. Nearly 100 District and community members attended the groundbreaking, including representatives from the City of Hesperia. The ceremony was opened with the Hesperia Junior High School band performing the National Anthem, followed by a welcome and introductions by District Superintendent Mark McKinney. Board member Hardy Black gave a brief history of the Junior High School, in which he served as a teacher for many years.
The gymnasium project has been the dream of the District for decades; however, a lack of funding and other priority projects delayed its construction. Although the project was approved by DSA and OPSC several years ago, it was placed on the SFP unfunded list as a result of the State bond freeze. Through the vision of the District's Board, and persistence of the Purchasing and Facilities Department, lead by Director Carmen Becker, the gymnasium project has now become a reality.
The project includes a new gymnasium, locker rooms, and a remodel of the existing locker rooms into a weight and aerobic room. The $5.4m project was designed by Frick, Frick and Jette' Architects and is being delivered with a Lease Lease-Back contract with Erickson-Hall Construction Company. The project is expected to be completed in August 2012. The Hesperia Star covered the event.
