CA school lessons on hold as districts negotiate with teachers unions

Nearly two weeks after schools across California closed without warning due to the coronavirus, many districts are stuck in neutral until labor negotiations get hashed out. Teachers unions across the state are demanding rules for distance learning obligations, holding up at-home lessons for students — especially in districts that already had fractured labor relationships.

California Teachers Association spokesperson Claudia Briggs said there have been “great examples of collaboration” between administrators and unions ever since districts en masse announced they would cancel classes weeks ago. Natomas Unified in Sacramento is among those that have reached agreements with their teachers to launch distance learning programs.
