Adopted budget makes changes to the charter school facility grant program

The Charter School Facility Grant Program (SB 740) provides annual assistance with facilities rent and lease expenditures to classroom-based charter schools that meet certain eligibility criteria. SB 740 awards the lesser of either: $1,117 per ADA as certified at Second Principal Apportionment; or 75% of the annual facilities rent or lease costs. The 2.71% COLA will be applied to the ADA amount in 2018-19 bringing it to $1,147.

To be eligible, a charter school must meet one of the following two criteria:

  • Fifty-five percent or more of the student enrollment at the charter school site is eligible for free and reduced-price meals (FRPM), or;
  • The charter school site for which grant funds are requested is physically located in the attendance area of a public elementary school in which 55% or more of the pupil enrollment is eligible for FRPM and the school site gives preference in admissions to pupils currently enrolled in that school and to pupils who reside in the elementary school attendance area where the charter school is located.
